How to connect to vehicle with non-standard OBD

Some vehicles manufactured during the early 2000 or later 90's might not implemented the OBD II in accordance to the standard.

In the event where OBDdash connects to the OBD adapter (reads the ELM hardware version, and lit up the Bluetooth /wifi icon on the home page) but is unable to connect to ECU using the default option, you can try specify a "custom init string" to supplement the app's default connection process.

A "custom init string" is basically a series of ELM commands for altering the OBD adapter's internal default/states so that they matches the vehicle' ECU interface.

There 2 preconditions for this to work:

  1. The app is able to connect to the OBD adapter with correct ELM version retrieved. If the app could not even connect to the OBD adapter, then the problem is probably caused by Windows setup, please refer to the Setup Bluetooth OBD adapter, Bluetooth connection issue, or Setup WiFi OBD page for more instructions.

  2. The OBD adapter supports these ELM commands. (Many adapters manufactured after 2015 only support very basic ELM commands, which might prevent this solution to work, for more info please see the Select  OBD adapter page)

To setup custom initialization string:

1. Ensure that the OBD adapter is connect to the vehicle's OBD port

2. Ensure that the vehicle ignition is at ON position with the OBD adapter powered up.

3. At the app's OBD connection setting page, Enable the option: 'Use custom init string'

4. Enter the correct custom initialization string in the text box, custom init string format: <AT Command_1>\n<AT Command_2>\n<AT Command_3> etc etc, see below for more details

5. Confirm the change and return to the home screen

6. Tap the 'connect' button to connect.
